'Under The Surface'
Paintings by Paul Monaghan 12th to 27th May 2007

Running until 27th May Under the Surface is a series of paintings in which the artist is looking underneath, or into the landscape. Here, murky underworlds, fungus innards, and the undergrowth are used as inspiration. The view is microscopic in places and bird’s eye in others. There are hints of diagrams as if these are actually intricate, organic, and natural maps which go on endlessly, even off the edge of the canvas.

Monaghan grew up in urban Belfast and these recent paintings  are a result  of his move to the relative peace and calm of the rural environment in which he now lives in Borris, Co. Carlow.

His work reflects his constant  connection with - and inspiration from - his immediate environment.

The gardens at Monksgrange, location of The Norman Gallery, are the perfect situation to show work with a strong connection to the world of nature.

Admission to the gallery is free, and all are welcome.
