FELT WORK
13th -16th October 2011
An exhibition by ISTVAN VIDAK
opening on Thursday 13th October at 6.00pm
In association with Guatastudio, Kiltealy, where a 4 day feltmaking workshop will be held, an exhibition by Hungarian felt artist Istvan Vidak will be held at The Norman Gallery. Production of felt, and artifacts made of it, is one of the oldest of subsistence activities of Central Asian nomads. The raw material of felt production is sheep, camel and goat wool. It serves as an irreplaceable material for making yurts, interior furnishings and clothing. Felt is an international material; in the life of a nomad, it is the yurt, a felt rug, horse-riding equipment and household furnishings. In Slavic culture, it means the famous Russian felt boots - "valenki". For Scandinavians, it is insulation of the sauna. In medieval Spain, they made felt made of the fine wool of merino sheep, which allowed the production of more delicate, soft and aesthetical material. Hungarian feltmaking includes influences from all parts of eastern Europe and western Asia.
‘Following the Felt Route’
Istvan Vidak will give a presentation at the gallery on Saturday 15th October at 7.00pm. Everyone is welcome and admission is FREE.
